A record number of golfers met the broiling morning heat at the Colony Creek Country Club to participate in the Victoria City Championship. With the wind whipping enough to make the trees rustle and water hazards ripple, scoring was slightly more difficult-- and some managed to navigate the course better than others.

Reigning champion Mark Bazan shot a 1-over par 73 for the low round of the day.

Bazan's group that included Texas Lutheran's Kerry Culberson (3-over par) and University of Houston-Victoria's Austin Griffin (6-over par).

Though being old enough to sire his three playing partners, 61-year old Gary McBroom tapped in for par on the 18th hole to remain just two strokes behind Bazan.

"The only way you can get your name on the championship trophy is to play in the top flight," he cracked after his round.

Also in the top flight of the competition, Claude Bridges shot a 74, while Donovan Dekowski was one stroke behind Bridges.

Throughout their rounds, competitors spoke of the nearly 20 mile per hour winds on the course and how it made them adjust.

"It's pretty hard, the wind is making it a tough challenge," Dale Loewen said after chipping in for an eagle from 22 yards away on the par-4 10th hole. "You can't play your normal swing. You have to manipulate the ball a little bit."

With nearly 105 golfers teeing off Friday, the record participation on the men's side came at a price. Organizer Claud Jacobs said the women's competition was canceled due to lack of interest.

"I think it's one of the best values in golf," Jacobs said. "Three courses, meals, greens fees and carts for $100. And all three courses are different."

And the competitors were just as diverse.

Wayne Brown joked about his double bogey streak while preparing for his second shot on the par-3 11th hole on his way to shooting an 87.

Ryan Barnett (14-over par 86) mourned the loss his favorite club, an 8-iron he has owned for six years, which broke while he was on the practice range.

Meanwhile, another gentleman impersonated British Open champion Darren Clarke as he would assault the fairways, but enjoy a cigar between strokes.

The heat notwithstanding, there was a sense of warmth among the 28 pairing as everyone all tried to shoot low as the morning temperatures in west Victoria started to soar.
