Robert Zavala, C.J. Castillo, Chris Cobler, Dr. Philip Suarez and J.R. Ortega pose during an informal awards ceremony at the office of the Victoria Advocate. Suarez presented the Advocate journalists with citations of merit from the Texas Medical Association for several articles about health.

The Victoria Advocate recently received state and national recognition for its health reporting.

The Texas Medical Association on Thursday presented an award for online/mixed media to the paper for work Erica Rodriguez, Drew Stewart, CJ Castillo and Robert Zavala did on "A Father's Strength," a series about Crossroads residents afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The medical association also presented health reporter J.R. Ortega an award for his article, "Love will never forget: Patients aren't only ones who live with Alzheimer's; caregivers do, as well."

The Advocate also was named a national finalist for the Associated Press Managing Editors association's Online Convergence award for "A Father's Strength."
