If Victoria College's walls could talk, they'd tell the story of Bill, who met his wife in Row J of the college's Fine Arts Auditorium.

The college is searching for Bill from El Campo, who expressed interest in commemorating the auditorium's match making that gave him his mate.

The college will demolish the auditorium later this year, but community members with ties to the building are encouraged to take part in an event called "If Walls Could Talk."

VC will sell commemorative bricks from the auditorium, and the college wants to make sure Bill gets his piece of history.

Bill - and anyone else interested in purchasing a brick - should contact Cara Frederick at Victoria College at 361-582-2419 or email cara.frederick@victoriacollege.edu.

"If Walls Could Talk" will be in August.

  • So we know that repairs to a building are expensive, particularly one that is nearing 50 years old. Still it would make sense to spend half a million dollars on a building worth more than $7 million rather than tear it down and have nothing (would you spend $500 to repair a car worth $7,000 or trash the car, remember you cannot use it as a trade-in in this instance).

The auditorium is not outdated. It may not have the most current "bells & whistles" but they are not really necessary to continue operating the facility.

This is more a lack of vision, both by the board and by the past and current administration.

  • Tax based organizations like VISD or Victoria College do not have to worry about money, they just take it. That is why VISD could destroy perfectly fine buildings at Crain school. They will just take more from those who make it. Victoria College will probably build another building at much more than the repair of the current one. The main problem is VISD has a better auditorium so the college will have to up that.

  • The auditorium needs over a half-million dollars in repairs, mainly to the roof. The facility is outdated (especially with the new VISD Performing Arts Center) and the college simply does not have that kind of money to pour into a building that is decades old. (Some) people rant and rave about any kind of tax increases..which is fine, they are entitled to their opinion...but then they have to understand there are repercussions down the line. This is just one of those repercussions. Tough decisions (and sometimes unpopular decisions) have to be made.

  • My comment didn't post from before...I would like to know why this is being torn down.

  • I mean what "repairs" does it really need?
