A barge struck the swing bridge on part of Farm-to-Market Road 457 in Sargent in Matagorda County early Wednesday morning. Repair work was completed later in the day.

A barge struck down a swing bridge in Sargent in Matagorda County.

The collision occurred about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, said Andy Brzozowski, maintenance supervisor for the Texas Department of Public Transportation in Matagorda County. The bridge is part of Farm-to-Market Road 457, Brzozowski said.

By 5:15 p.m., the bridge was repaired and opened to traffic.

There were no injuries. Brzozowski said he doesn't know exactly what went wrong.

"They lost control of it, and that's all I know," he said.

During the repairs, a boat was available to get people to and from the island that the road connects to in case of any emergencies.
