Stacey Frerich is the 2011 Victoria West High School salutatorian.

STACEY FRERICH

PARENT: Annette Frerich

GPA: 102.4

PLANS: Attend Texas A&M University and major in biomedical science with the goal of becoming a doctor.

Stacey Frerich's biggest struggle and motivator are one in the same: the West High School Legacy Dance Team.

As senior captain, the 18-year-old has been tasked with endless officer duties, but the challenge has only made her more determined.

"I liked doing well in academics to help us get a good name, and I wanted to represent our team well," Stacey said.

Stacey lived up to her expectations, graduating as salutatorian of her class.

She said she worked hard to rise through the ranks after realizing she was ninth in her class - freshman year. But even with her academic goals, Stacey has dedicated time to other things, such as NHS, student council and speech and debate.

"I had to make time for my life in there somewhere," she remembered. "Some weekends, I'd literally schedule, 'OK, I'm going to have fun here.'"

But being busy is in her nature. Stacey said she's one of those people who can't relax on a vacation until all of the unpacking is complete.

"Sometimes I wish I could procrastinate a little bit. I finally got a little bit of the senior-itis, and it was nice," she said, laughing.

Stacey said the struggles and triumphs of leading a dance team, changing high schools, navigating social circles and interacting with teachers shaped her more into the young woman she is today than simply the academic aspect of school.

"Sometimes I see my experiences going on through school as more important ... learning more life experiences," she said.

And she plans on taking those life experiences with her when she heads to Texas A&M University to study biomedical science.

"There's a lot to learn, no matter what age you are," Stacey said. "I think you're still learning that as you grow in life. You never stop learning."
