SEADRIFT - Imagine one place that had a cook-off, pageants, a Battle of the Bands and tug-of-war.
Well, this weekend, the 2011 Shrimpfest will offer all these activities and more. The festival is in its 31st year.
The Seadrift Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the action-packed festival at the San Antonio Bay. Chamber President Jason Jones said the goal is to promote tourism in the city.
"We want to promote the use of the bay to help the city grow and prosper," he said. He also said that a portion of the proceeds will go toward the beautification of the city.
The festival is a family-friendly event where there is something for everyone. Friday, there will be a shrimp cook-off and a Miss Shrimpfest pageant. Even babies who are a few months old will participate. The Ross Brunner Band will close out the night.
Saturday will begin with a kids fishing tournament and a 5K run and walk. For those competitive individuals, there will be volleyball and horseshoes and washers tournaments. In the middle of the day, there is a shrimp-eating contest.
Music lovers get ready for hours of live music. Several bands, including 24-7 and The Majestics, will compete in a Battle of the Bands. First-place winners will receive $2,000 and bragging rights. Each group will have 40 minutes to perform.
Frank Benavides will play guitar with his band The Majestics. The Victoria native said this is an opportunity to give the group more exposure.
"We're trying to open some doors," he said.
