Victoria Advocate wins sweepstakes in Texas Press Association contest

The Victoria Advocate received first place in general excellence and was named overall sweepstakes winner Saturday in the annual Texas Press Association contest.

"Front pages are eye-catching and flow well," the judges wrote. "They give a wealth of info at first glance. The writing is excellent, as well as the special sections. Great job!"

The Advocate's other winning entries:

-- Feature story, first place, Erica Rodriguez, "A Father's Strength" series and Gabe Semenza's "Dream Street" story

-- Sports coverage, first place, staff

-- Routine special section, first place, GC, the magazine of the Golden Crescent

-- Advertising, second place, staff

-- Feature photo, second place, Angeli Wright and Frank Tilley

-- Page design, second place, Kimiko Fieg and staff

-- Website, third place, staff

-- Column writing, third place, Aprill Brandon

-- Headline writing, fourth place, staff

The Advocate competed against daily newspapers ranging in circulation from 7,000-99,999. Founded in 1880, the Texas Press Association represents more than 500 member newspapers.
