Defending the Calhoun run attack will be more difficult next year with the likelihood of a new addition.

Soon to be senior running back Daniel Brooks, who played at Class 3A Rockdale last year, has moved with his family to the Port Lavaca after his father's job at Alcoa was transferred to the plant in Point Comfort.

Last year, Brooks ran for almost 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns at Rockdale last season.

Although Calhoun head football coach and athletic director Richard Whitaker said he's met the Brooks family, and all signs point to him joining the Sandcrabs, he didn't want to comment on the situation until the Brooks officially enrolls at Calhoun.

"They're a good family and they're excited about coming," Whitaker said. "Right now, I just don't want to comment on kids that are not Calhoun students yet."

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound running back has already committed to sign with Oklahoma.

Brooks would join a crowded backfield that already has three 1,000-yard rushers. Last season, fullback Brandon Griffith ran for 1,605 yards, quarterback Joseph Bargas had 1,577 yards and Jeremy Loya added 1,005 yards.

The three combined to score 54 rushing touchdowns last season.

Brooks also won the state Class 3A title in the 100-meter-dash this year.

Brooks is also an accomplished defensive back. He had five interceptions for Rockdale, and his speed could be an asset to a Calhoun secondary that struggled against quality teams, including a giving up 511 yards and eight touchdowns against Boerne Champion quarterback John Free in a playoff loss.
