We think adding another park in Victoria is great. And the city has done just that this past week.

Land totaling 127.99 acres located between Deer Chase Road and Stadium Drive (north of the old Victoria High School) that abuts Lone Tree Creek was designated as park land that will be developed to have five soccer fields, five baseball/softball fields, a football/soccer field and a splash pad.

And the Victoria City Council also designated 31.56 of the acreage as a natural area that would have nature trails.

The park will be built with a $1 million matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The grant was received in 2009, but the city held off moving on it because of poor economic times. The park would remain a park in perpetuity as one of the stipulations of the grant.

We agree with O.C. Garza, the city's communication director, that the park land is good use of the property. The city property was used for drainage purposes. During heavy rains, the trails will flood, but nothing would be harmed.

Also, developing a park in that vicinity of the city is needed because none are close by.

While we think another park is great, we hope the city maintains it and all the other municipal parks, as well. Clean and trimmed with utilities maintained is a must for successful parks.

We also think this park could be added to an overall master plan for the city's parks - a plan that would connect all the parks with a trail. The city's residents would enjoy such a connecting trail.

Residents' use of the existing hike and bike trail is good indication that a citywide trail would be well used.

Again, we praise the city for creating another park, which will serve residents with outdoor entertainment and activities.

This editorial reflects the views of the Victoria Advocate's editorial board.

  • Never mind, Mr. DeLaney, Legion found it!

“What's now little more than a large hole in the ground in east Victoria could become a park with a water playground, nature area and practice fields.

"The park would be along Lone Tree Creek between the Tanglewood and Tangerine subdivisions.”

The above is from this Victoria Advocate article: http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/news/...

    There is a graphic attached.

Thanks, Legion for tracking this down! I knew I hadn’t dreamt it!

  • Any luck on locating that graphic of the splash park yet?

I have a $100 bet riding on this.

Can you ask one of the Zavalas? I bet they could find it in a heartbeat!

    Thanks!

  • So the park isn't going where the retention pond is located, but across Airline. Doesn't a portion of that land belong to VISD? The Ag farm and "Finellys hill"?

  • EdithAnn -- The park is being developed between Deer Chase Road and Stadium Drive. We did have a preliminary layout of the park once. I will see if we can get that published again with followup stories.

  • This editorial states that this park area and splash pad will be locate on the west side of Airline. I seem to recall an illustration (probably done by one of the Zavalas) attached to a story awhile back showing this park area and splash pad being located on the east side of Airline between Tanglewood and Tangerine subdivisions.

The splash areas were to be nearer Tangerine and Airline. The soccer fields would be on the Tanglewood side.

Has the city changed the location and moved this project across the street?

Maybe you could reprint the illustration so folks could have another look.
