More than 40 area pre-k and elementary students visited the Big Apple this week, and they didn't even leave Victoria.

Using New York City-themed sets, including yellow cabs, hot dog stands and Murray's NY-style pizza, Baptist Temple Church volunteers taught the children about the Bible during a week-long Big Apple Adventure vacation Bible school.

"I like the arts and crafts. I made a bookmark and a bag with two taxis," said 11-year-old Charles Young.

When asked what he has been learning in VCB this week, Charles said "I've learned the ABCs to being a Christian, and that anything can be completed if you put your mind to it ... and that He's always there."

Baptist Temple pastor, the Rev. Johnny Wilson, described the ABCs as A - admitting to God you're a sinner; B - believing Jesus is God's son, and C - confessing your faith.

With a team of about 20 volunteers, Wilson helped organize the free communitywide VBS with music, crafts, missions, Bible studies and recreation projects focussed on teaching the kids about Jesus.

"We keep them busy," Wilson laughed.

Using the New York sets and props, Wilson said the children are focussing on three major themes: love, trust and faith.

"Everything is tied together," Wilson said. "We just want to teach them about the things that matter like loving other people, and caring for other people."

Some of the breakout sessions for the kids include learning about Bible characters, using church members dressed in costume and acting out the characters for the children. Others include learning praise and worship songs and dances.

Upstairs in the music room Tuesday morning, 9-year-old Emily Spahn, of Austin, learned a hip-hop song and choreography about the ABCs of Christianity.

"I like learning about Jesus. I want to become a Christian," she said. "I have a lot of friends who are already Christians, and I think someday I will be baptized."

Next door in the craft room, 5-year-old Nathan Halpin was busy drawing and learning about the apostle Peter, formerly named Simon.

"Today we're learning about Simon and Peter and how they walked on water. I learned that they listened to Jesus," Nathan said, busy making a blue bookmark with an upside-down Statue of Liberty on it. "Yesterday, we saw Jonah and the whale. It was pretty cool."

VBS continues through Thursday, and the church welcomes all those interested in attending.
