Some of the country's best calf ropers will visit Jackson County for the Killebrew Dodge Chrysler Jeep Calf Roping event on Saturday, March 19.
Held at the Brackenridge Main Event Center at 1 p.m., the event offers a hefty $4,000 purse for high roping scores. Among the notable cowboys entering the competition are former DeWitt County residents Ace Slone, of Cuero, and Caleb Smidt, of Yorktown.
Both Slone and Smidt will participate in a calf roping duel presented by Killebrew Dodge at the Main Event Center.
Last year, Slone, a student at Texas A&M, was the 2010 PRCA Calf Roping Rookie of the Year and All-Around Rookie of the Year.
And in previous years, Slone has doubly qualified in calf roping and team roping at the College National Finals Rodeo.
Smidt, a student at Sam Houston State University, was the 2009 and 2010 CPRA Calf Roping Champion and the 2009 and 2010 All-Around Cowboy. Smidt was the 2010 College National All-Around Cowboy and national calf roping runner-up.
Additional entrants' names will not be known until March 14.
Admission is $5, children under 6 years old are free. Ticket sales will benefit the nonprofit organization Cowboys Organization Working to Benefit Our Youth, to raise money for economically disadvantaged youth interested in participating in livestock shows.
