On April 1, Warrior's Weekend will hold its second annual Muster at the Victoria Community Center, and it promises to be even bigger and better than last year. Last year's Muster was completely sold out, and we believe this year's will be, also.
This year, we will again honor our local Gold Star Families, along with wounded heroes from around Texas, several from our local area. Also, we are pleased to announce that several special guests are scheduled to appear. Among these are the famous "Kissing Sailor," Glenn McDuffie who has become a big supporter of Warrior's Weekend the past two years. Also scheduled to join us is Bill Buchanan, a member of the crew that was to be on board when the third A-Bomb would have been dropped on Japan had they not surrendered. Boeing Aircraft told the crew that they would not survive the blast, but they were going anyway.
Also, A.J. High, one of the back-up pilots to Jimmy Doolittle's crew, should they not be able to make the first bombing run over Tokyo, is scheduled to be present. High was one of the first pilots for Trans Texas Airways after the war. Again, this will be truly a great night to honor America's heroes from all eras.
Of course, this is a fundraiser, and there will be many opportunities to participate so that we may bring upwards of 300 wounded heroes plus family members to Port O'Connor in May for a weekend of fishing and a celebration of their sacrifice and service to America. This is a very expensive undertaking as well you can imagine, but we know we are changing lives. Again, our heroes tell us so.
The live auction this year will offer barbecue pits made by local VISD students that will impress anyone along with many other really great items. One of the highlights of our live auction is the Heroes Cup fishing trips, whereby you and your mate will fish with a licensed guide and a wounded hero on Baffin Bay in September. We held our first Heroes Cup last year to rave reviews from our heroes and the folks around the Baffin Bay area. We also will be offering guided fishing and hunting trips from our local guides and supporters.
There will also be a great silent auction, raffle - including a gun raffle - and games to participate in. Attendees will again enjoy a great rib-eye steak dinner, drinks and all of the trimmings. Folks are still talking about the great steaks they enjoyed last year. Because it is the season of Lent, we will also be offering grilled fish as an entrée.
On April 2, our special guests will also appear at The Wings of Freedom, Living History Tour being held at Victoria Regional Airport and sponsored by The Guadalupe Victoria Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution. McDuffie will be autographing and selling 8 by 10 pictures of his famous photograph for $10 each. I can assure you that you won't want to miss this opportunity. Icons like McDuffie and the other heroes don't pass through Victoria every day. Bettye Pribyl, a great volunteer for Warrior's Weekend, is in charge of that great event for the DAR and we are proud to assist them in bringing in these great heroes.
The doors to Warrior's Weekend Muster II will open at 4:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 6:30 p.m. We are not offering individual tickets at this time, as we believe we will sell out the Community Center Dome with sponsor tables, which sell for $350 each, seat eight and are going fast. Please contact us at 361-572-0001 if you are interested in honoring true American heroes.
Remember that Warrior's Weekend in Port O'Connor is May 21 and is "kicked off" with the dedication of The Warrior's Weekend Field of Honor, here in Victoria at Faith Family Church on May 20. beginning at 3 p.m. Many of our wounded heroes will be present.
You can sponsor a flag to honor a veteran for $40 by going to our website - www.warriorsweekend.org - or by coming by our office, 3603 Miori Lane, here in Victoria.
This year promises to be spectacular for the Field of Honor, where we believe more than 1,500 flags will be on display. The posting of the flags will be on May 14, and we encourage the sponsors and the veterans being honored to join in this ceremony as well.
We look forward to seeing you at these great events.
Ron Kocian is president of the Warrior's Weekend organization in Victoria.
