jlord- by your logic the NCAA would cease to exist. Colleges make millions, if not billions, off of the performance of their athletes.
March 23, 2011 at 10:12 p.m. -
JLordtree, are you serious about "Pay for Performance"?
The students perform a sports activity and VISD receives funds. Do you have any idea how much money the school district made off ticket sales and parking during football season? And there are also proceeds from concessions (Coke Only), which I believe goes to the band boosters.
March 23, 2011 at 9:27 p.m. -
Thank you Ms Erica. Nice article. Dont let censorship keep us from know whats going on. Write it!! The good and the controversial.
March 23, 2011 at 7:46 p.m. -
kash, does not matter who it is given to. It is pay for performance. The students perform a commercial for booster club to receive funds. This is different then drama doing a play. They are not lending their image or support to something for money.
Coke is not even close to being a comparison to my argument. Mine is not of commercialism, instead an eligibility threat issue. Erica, you may want to follow up on that possibility. I am not sure if that would have been an issue at UIL or even possibly NCAA future.
March 23, 2011 at 7:45 p.m. -
Ford and Mac Haik should offer this to St. Joe, bet they would jump at it!
March 23, 2011 at 6:18 p.m. -
Fatboy,
Thanks for reading. Becky Cooper is our local editor and Tom Martinez is our managing editor. They are often copied on communication to make sure it gets to the right person in the newsroom.
March 23, 2011 at 5:19 p.m. -
Who is Tom Martinez and Becky Cooper?? They were copied in a email responce and it's shown on the pdf file.
March 23, 2011 at 5:10 p.m. -
I guess I'm part of the "Good Ole Boy System" because I fail to see the issue with this. I don't consider it to be exploitation or even close.
You are all free to convince me otherwise.
March 23, 2011 at 4:46 p.m. -
The money would be donated to the SCHOOL. Mr. Crockett would decide where the funds would go. PERIOD.
March 23, 2011 at 3:54 p.m. -
Just another reason this VICTORIA family attends Cuero ISD! What's your school district of choice?
March 23, 2011 at 3:50 p.m. -
Actually no student would be paid, the money would be donated to the booster club.
March 23, 2011 at 2:19 p.m. -
JD- visit GE-R. VISD'S policy. This has more weight than some article of the internet.
An employee recieving kudos by her students is not the issue I believe. VISD is trying to stay away from commerialism. Lets learn first.
Mr. Moore said no. Drop it. Cut that booster involvement Mr. Moore! Like you did the the west dance team. Its coming!!
One booster is to receive $$ because an auto employee on the club wanted to boost the gifts. Nope.
March 23, 2011 at 2:01 p.m. -
And BTW JackDeauce, I really never sided on one side or the other on the amaturism status deal. Only, has that been investigated. There is a reason you have NEVER seen an eligible college athlete on TV doing a commercial. It would end their eligibility. I just asked if a situation like this would threaten UIL and even NCAA eligibility. Would hate for the student and the school threatened with that. I never said I agree with the stringent regulations UIL and NCAA have on ameturism status, but they are there.
March 23, 2011 at 1:45 p.m. -
RedRage how is that even close to a good point? Was there a 500 dollar prize attached to the booster club whose team won the tacky boot trophy? I agree the boot trophy is tacky, but the chamber did not pay anyone to hold it up. It is a rivalry trophy, which many cities that have rivalries including colleges have.
March 23, 2011 at 1:42 p.m. -
JackDeauce you are completely miscontruing my argument. I am not against students being there and promoting if they receive no pay. The moment they get paid (as Ford is proposing) for their participation in an advertising, that is where they lose amature status. DQ Game of the Week=did not pay, if anything caused more promotion in Victoria East/West than DQ. Chamber of Commerce did not pay any of the athletes, schools programs, etc. An organization can pay to be a sponsor, can donate funds, etc. This I just questions because it is like "if you participate in an advertisement, then we will give x amount of money". That is conditional and almost like a pay for performance.
March 23, 2011 at 1:39 p.m. -
At the high school level school administrators cannot be involved in the booster club organization except approving activities held at the high school.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booster_...
March 23, 2011 at 12:54 p.m. -
Plain and simple, it was stupid for them NOT to accept the offer. Additionally, the school administration has no authority over the booster club. They can always hold it off campus. But alas, the power tripping admins that be, get their way again. GOOD OLE BOYS CLUB OF TEXAS.....
March 23, 2011 at 12:21 p.m. -
JLordTree,
A quick Google Search yielded Guyer H.S. in Denton, TX and R.L. Turner H.S. in Carrolton, Texas. I'm sure there's more.
March 23, 2011 at 12:10 p.m. -
Possibly, but how many times within Texas? Every state has different rules and Ford does not always care or know state athletic association rules on the status of a player. Also even between public/private schools...it can be different.
March 23, 2011 at 11:49 a.m. -
I am sure if Ford has been doing this, it is within UIL rules. Otherwise no school would have accepted.
March 23, 2011 at 11:27 a.m. -
JackDeace East got further than West in basketball playoffs, but that aside. Why in the world is it bad for the winner of East/West to hold a trophy? Look at all rivalry games, especially in college....there is always some sort of trophy or item involved, and people take pictures. My question is, that it would essentially be paying the team for advertising, which last I checked violated amature status
March 23, 2011 at 11:13 a.m. -
@JWHarrison
4. If the East Booster club wants to do this, they can still do it. Just not on school property, and keep Victoria East High School's name out of it. The problem is the all of problems with the program started because East Booster Club was trying to figure out a way to get around the requirements of the program to start with. The money is supposed to go TO THE SCHOOL to be disbursed how the school chooses....
The East Booster was told they could not hold the fundraiser regardless of location.
Mr Crocket was going to RECEIVE ALL THE FUNDS, and disburse. The hope was that many clubs would take part in this event, not just football.
March 23, 2011 at 10:45 a.m. -
JackDuece brings up a good point. They had no problem having the winner of the East-West football game hoisting that tacky Boot Trophy from the Chamber of Commerce. hmmm
March 23, 2011 at 10:23 a.m. -
Tstorm5--Finally! Something we agree on! There is not enough integrity in Victoria. You do believe in stepping up to do the right thing, right?
So, what say you--and all the others who claim to have integrity--meet me at Coca-Cola Memorial Stadium this Saturday at oh, say 10:00 a.m. (I'd like to sleeep late) and we'll start tearing out that artificial turf Coke so generously traded for all of the Coke machines on all the campuses and that ADVERTISING on the scoreboard?
See you there!
March 23, 2011 at 10:10 a.m. -
jwharrison - I have one question for you. What/Who does the booster club support?
March 23, 2011 at 10:01 a.m. -
HOLY MOLY Folks! This is VISD at it's best. Run and run far away. Industrial, Goliad, Cuero, Refugio, Calhoun doesn't have these problems. Leadership is lacking to say the least. Take this advice: Transfer and transfer quickly!
March 23, 2011 at 10 a.m. -
The whole keeping the schools completely equal is silly. So if one school makes state, they can't go unless the other school does too. Or if they make it two years in a row, you are going to send the other team to be fair.
March 23, 2011 at 9:37 a.m.
The coke thing is a constant push for their product. I heard once that if kids brought their own drinks, it had to be a coke product. I can't see much difference in driving a car and drinking a coke. Are there no coke ads in the school? The machines don't say coke?
The "commericial" thing could be left up to if the parents wanted their child shown. Then use the money on something that benefits both schools such as fixing up the stadium. Last time I was there, the bathrooms and concession area were ancient. -
I guess that the fact that all of you, including, the Advocate, so totally missed the point, shouldn't surprise me at all.
1. The program is designed to give money to the SCHOOL. That is not what was proposed. What was proposed was to give the money to a Booster Club. NOT THE SCHOOL OR THE DISTRICT! The district can sign a deal (like the Dr. Pepper deal to put turf in the stadium) because the deal befitted the entire district. This money would not even benifit the school, IT WOULD GO TO THE BOOSTER CLUB!
2. The East Booster Club did not come up with this idea. An employee at Mac Haik brought the idea to the booster club. The program has been in place since prior to 2009.
3. Again, the money wouldn't go to the district. It wouldn't reduce the amount of money the district would give to the East football program. It wouldn't go toward education. It would be used by the East booster club however they saw fit. VISD can NOT allow a booster club to use school facilities and students, to endorse a product for a group that is not under the control of the district.
For instance....
The program at Flushing Michigan (From mlive.com) - "The money will be dispersed to the band, athletics or drivers education program, said Jason Melynchek, high school principal."
Again, the money is supposed to go to the schools, for the school's use. Not a booster club who can decide how they use the money.
March 23, 2011 at 9:32 a.m. -
I wonder if tstorm would feel the same had it been the West Booster club?
I think it's easy to fix the issue. Move the test drives off of campus, problem solved. The kids' parents can decide if they do or don't want them to be in a commercial.
How long are we really going to try and make the high schools equal? Trying to split everything down the middle is silly and wastes time and energy. Even if it was actually possible to make them exatly the same there is always going to be a preception of inequality. Stop now before it's too late. It could end up being like t-ball now. You don't keep score so everyone is a winner and nobody feels bad. Boo hoo. Please!
March 23, 2011 at 9:28 a.m. -
great leadership Mr. Moore! To approve this is turning the cheek. These are student athletes not pros.
To compare a teacher recieving cash for their program is a differ recognition than exploiting a student.
UIL will not love to see this happen. Take a deep sponsorship $12k as I have said before and move on. TBK is dead. Dont go there.
Ford should fire thier marketing director. Check UIL Texas requirements BEFORE you exploit non driving students for anticipated sales.
Maybe CAT will donate a scoreboard and we can dump FORD.
March 23, 2011 at 9:27 a.m. -
Congratulations VISD. Since this program was started in 2007 you are the first of hundreds of schools to turn down this opportunity. Way to go in getting Victoria noticed for something!
As for the commercial, I'd suggest a few of you do a little more research on the program. It's not a commercial where Ford comes in and films students. It's a student-produced film, you know, where they actually have to use their brain, talents, and skills a little bit. They aren't just given $24000 to be in a commercial....they have to win the film contest against all the other schools that are participating. Heaven forbid we ask kids to get rewarded for their creativity and, yes tstorm, hard work.
March 23, 2011 at 9:26 a.m. -
Ford is GIVING away MILLIONS of dollars on this venture for EDUCATION across the nation.
East should've been allowed to at least have the "drive one 4 UR school" for the chance at 12k. Ridiculous decision to make some students and programs suffer for lack of VISD's vision.
March 23, 2011 at 9:12 a.m. -
I can not believe my eyes. Who in their right mind would agree with NOT allowing a school to receive funds? I have heard the term, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" but I guess some have not. I will never understand why people make a big deal about something so small. VISD in my opinion, falls off the mark once again. I am really starting to despise this town. Yeah, I know I can always move if I do not like it. Always an option...
WELCOME TO HICKTORIA we got "boots" that look like they are straight out of the movie Rawhide and uneducated folk here... come stay in our hotels and see all of the wonderful sites we offer. LOL
March 23, 2011 at 8:25 a.m. -
So when a VISD Teacher is fortunate enough to be selected for HEB's teacher recognition where both the teacher and the school receive a large cash award AND appear in an HEB ad, we will see VISD saying, "No thanks!" because there wasn't a teacher selected from every school in VISD?
Good point on the TKB.
This is Victoria--Burger King rules apply. You can have it any way you want when you're in charge.
March 23, 2011 at 8:21 a.m. -
As a taxpayer, I hate to see the district pass up $24,000 that could be used instead of tax dollars. In the large bucket of the VISD budget, twenty-four grand is a small drop, but it's still a sizable chunk of change.
March 23, 2011 at 7:52 a.m. -
I applaud Dr. Moore & the VISD Board on their decision. In these tight economic times it's easy to do anything for that extra buck. It's tough being a leader. And thank God we have one!
March 23, 2011 at 7:39 a.m. -
I don't really know much about the two schools and how they work, but do the profits from TKB go to West or do they go to both school? I can remember some people talking "trash" about TKB, because they only went to West when it should have gone to both schools. I'm not sure how much of it is true, just what some people have said. If it all goes to West then I think it would be stupid for East not to do something to bring in money. When you slpit a high school into two different schools they should be treated the same.
March 23, 2011 at 2:17 a.m. -
Oh brother! Well I know how hard East side football booster has worked and is still working to support all in the program! It's a shame to let this amount of money be turned away. I really see no harm in having help that they won't be able to get from the district towards improvements.
March 22, 2011 at 10:35 p.m. -
I agree with VISD. Bob is making the tough decisions to be equal and consistent.
March 22, 2011 at 10:01 p.m. -
OK. Forget about the commercial and only participate in the Test Drive for $12,000.
March 22, 2011 at 9:34 p.m. -
I love capitalism, marketing and product placement... but not when it involves our children. No negatives against Ford or Mac Haik, but it is not appropriate for our children to be used to directly promote a product. Having a Coke logo on a scoreboard is one thing, asking our children to hand out Coke samples and film a video while doing it is another.
Just as they were right to not allow Memorial to be part of an MTV reality show, the VISD board was correct on this one. Good job!
March 22, 2011 at 9:26 p.m. -
The $24,000 could be distributed throughout VISD and shared by both high schools to defray the cost of the needed supplies and towards expanding the facilities. The school is constantly having the children sell "junk" with very little profit to raise money.
The Coke deal is also a commercial - a continuous commercial AND every VISD function MUST use Coke Products.
