A house was destroyed by a fire that started about 8 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and Steen Road. No one was home at the time of the fire, which resulted in a total loss, said James Herchek, a firefighter with the Yoakum Fire Department.

By 10:45 p.m., firefighters were still on the scene.

The Yoakum, Cuero and Gonzales fire departments responded, Herchek said.

Further information was not available Thursday night.
