A Victoria County Sheriff's Office deputy seized 77 pounds of marijuana Monday during a traffic stop on U.S. 59.
Cpl. Craig Kirkpatrick arrested Rafael Puebla Jr., 23, of San Juan, after 29 wrapped bundles of marijuana were found in a speaker box in the trunk of Puebla's 2002 Mercury Mountaineer.
Puebla was initially pulled over about 1:30 p.m. on U.S. 59, near John Stockbauer Drive on suspicion of following too closely behind a commercial bus, according to Kirkpatrick's report.
Kirkpatrick wrote that Puebla was noticeably nervous during questioning, and avoided eye contact with him. The deputy gained permission to search the vehicle.
Rocky, a drug detection dog, hit on the trunk area. The speaker box was searched because it was unusually heavy and the screws were new, according to the report.
Puebla charged with second-degree felony possession of marijuana greater than 50 pounds, less than 2,000 pounds.
