NU to pay 25K to settle retaliation suit

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska has agreed to pay $25,000 in a settlement in a retaliation lawsuit filed by a former climatologist at the university's High Plains Regional Climate Center.

The Lincoln Journal Star reported the settlement in Christy Carlson's case on Monday. The case had been set for trial in June. It was settled on Friday.

In 2008, Carlson sued the center's director, Ken Hubbard, and the regents. She alleged that Hubbard treated her differently than he treated her male co-workers. A federal jury in December awarded Carlson $280,000. A judge then granted a new trial, finding the award had been excessive and not based on evidence.

David Buntain, the attorney for the university, and Hubbard say settlement was made without admitting to Carlson's contentions or allegations of wrongdoing.
