Wreck sends two to hospital, temporarily closes Houston Highway near Loop 463

A 27-year-old woman's burned Chevy Pickup is loaded onto a wrecker at the intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and Loop 463 Tuesday afternoon. She failed to yield and struck a 30-year-old man's Ford F-250 at the intersection as she exited the highway.

A two-vehicle wreck closed the Houston Highway in both directions near Loop 463 overpass for about an hour Tuesday evening.

The engine compartment of one of the vehicles - a Chevy pickup - caught on fire and burned the front of the vehicle.

The Victoria Police Department reported a 27-year-old Victoria woman, driving the Chevy, failed to yield the right-of-way when she got off the loop. A 30-year-old male driving a Ford F-250 crashed into her.

Police Officer Steven Lang said, "The parties are in OK condition and are being medically evaluated." Lang said the accident victims were taken to Citizens Medical Center.

The Ford had moderate front damage, according to Fire Department Chief Roger Hempel.

Officials from the Victoria Fire Department said they received the call at 5:51 p.m. Wednesday.

Walter Dupuy said, "I just happened to see the smoke, and I was going home."

The warehouse worker said he was traveling on U.S. Highway 59 northbound when he saw the the police driving in the center lane.

"I just saw the truck burning, and within minutes I saw everybody (fire department, EMS, police)," he said. "It was a quick response."

Another commuter, Kari Lemons, did not see the wreck but did witness the truck on fire. "I just saw the truck on fire and people on the other side of the highway."

The northbound lane reopened at 7 p.m. The accident is under investigation.
