VICTORIA COUNTY - A 4-year-old Victoria boy is dead after he was accidentally shot by a sibling Wednesday night.
The boy, whose name is not being released, was fatally shot in the abdomen by a 5-year-old sibling who was playing with a bolt action rifle in the back room of their home, Chief Deputy Terry Simons with the Victoria County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.
The call came in at 10 p.m. from a residence on Farm-to-Market Road 444, just south of Telferner, Simons said.
The boy's parents drove to the Telferner Grocery and Market by private vehicle to save time and meet with paramedics, who then rushed the boy to Citizens Medical Center.
The boy was pronounced dead at 10:31 p.m., Simons said.
The parents were at the home at the time of the shooting, but the sheriff's office is investigating to see why the boy and his sibling were left unsupervised, Simons said.
"We're still in the preliminary stages of the investigation," Simons said.
An autopsy has been ordered.
