Cinco de Mayo is a widely celebrated tradition with Goliad ties.

General Ignacio Zaragoza was born in the Mexican state of La Bahia Del Espirito Santo, Coahuila, which is now Goliad. His army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

According to the General Zaragoza Society, the Mexican army was poorly equipped, but triumphant after Zaragoza gave troops his famous patriotic speech. "Your enemies are the first soldiers of the world, but you are the first sons of Mexico. They wish to seize your Fatherland. Soldiers! I read victory and faith on your foreheads. Long live independence! Long live the Fatherland!"

On September 11, 1862, President Benito Juárez issued a decree making Cinco de Mayo a national holiday.

The Zaragoza Society is a 67-year-old organization that exhibits pride and respect for their culture. Cinco de Mayo has symbolic significance. People celebrate with fiestas, parades and civic commemorations.

For 30 years, the society has hosted a pageant for girls to exhibit dresses from different regions in Mexico.
