Of course some would love this email, though I severely take offense to his notion that UHV is not a local institution. While I know it is part of a larger institution, it further shows that even the old puppet that is Dr. Smith doesn't care a thing about this city. And victorianbybirth, Smith has never grown enrollment. He has been provost as long as I can remember, and most of the time it was a low period of growth. Very few students could even tell you what he looked like. One would like an university to be vested in the success of the community it is in. The fact the provost/interim lame duck presidident and apparently the system does not view that is really disturbing...but then again...according to Dr. Smith, all of us who would like to not be treated like the unwanted stepchild of the UH system are delusional and in need of therapy.
The email is attached to this story. See "Official Documents" in the column to the right of the byline.
"Whatever antipathies toward the University of Houston System of some local leaders, they do remain steadfast supporters of the university - even though the university is really not the local institution they consider it to be," Smith wrote in an email dated Oct. 14. "They are just full of resentment, along with illusions about the future."
I cannot adequately express my disappointment that Dr. Smith was not allowed the opportunity by his superiors to author an opinion column in the VA. I hope the full text of his emails become available to the public as well as a diagram of the sentence he was trying to construct in the quote above.
Gabe, can you publish the full text of the email?
Is Dennis Patillo in charge of enrollment? Can he single handedly grow this University himself? If so, what has been waiting for? Get to it Dennis!! Would you like to borrow my granddaughters new blinking butterfly magic wand?
Illusions is an appropriate, even kind, word...personally, I would have chosen delusions.
