  • Theo...You're not understanding. If the police can't write tickets, there'd be no revenue generated, dontchaknow. The poor state would go broke. Oh! Wait! We already ARE broke. Maybe we should lower the limit to 50 and let'em write LOTS of tickets. Why, we could balance the budget.

  • From somone who is on the road constantly, NO!! With all the distractions to a drivers, the last thing we need is a higher speed limit.

The old "55 is pretty high" was a reaction to the oil embargo of the 1970's and was principally put in effect to lower consumption. Interestingly we are in a similiar price squeeze (for an entire different reason) today, yet have no concern for consumption.

Americans must not be really hurting at the gas pump. Yet.

  • Can someone please explain the logic of restricting personal freedom when there has been no true crime?

True crime includes a clear victim! If there is no victim, no true crime has been committed.

Government's use of police force should be reserved to punishing evildoers. Going 70 or 80 as opposed to going 50 or 60, on an open road, and doing so safely should be MY personal choice. As I deem I can do so safely! You have no right to restrict my freedom as long as I can do so with no harm to person or property! You want to give me a ticket and call me a criminal when I have hurt no one and damaged no property? Where is the victim here?

Why do you wish to restrict my freedom to move about at whatever speed I deem safe? If I cause no harm why do you desire to punish me?

I have NEVER had a moving or parking violation! And, I am not a young man. Yet, people want to place restrictions on me. This is no more than a desire to control others...the ability to tell free persons what they can or cannot do on publicly owned roads!

Do you understand how offensive that is to freedom-loving Americans? We despise being treated like children when we do not behave like children. If I proved I can move about safely at ANY speed, why would you feel the complusion to punish me?

Man was NOT created for laws. Laws are created for Man. And, laws should not restrict personal freedom until a true crime has been committed! Laws should punish evil-doing and evil-doers that PROVED themselves untrustworthy!

We have lost the concept of personal freedom! We are so willing to exchange the personal freedom of others for some sense of false security for ourselves! When will you stop these intrusions into my personal life?

Speed limit signs do not stop someone from driving fast! Laws do not stop people from behaving irresponsibly! Punish ONLY those who cannot exercise their personal freedom responsibly. Do NOT restrict those of us who not only drive responsibly but also live responsibly!

Stop your made-up laws and pretend crimes! Stop calling a violation a crime when there has been no victim! Return the purpose of government to punishing actual criminals! Punish those intent on doing evil! And, make the punishment fit the crime!

Get out of my life! Leave me alone! Stop restricting my personal freedom with your personal preferences!

  • According to Elkin's logic, it's time to just go ahead and lower the drinking age so that there will be no underage drinking. But seriously, is the only PRO that we will get to our destinations faster?

  • So how much will the "changing of the road signs" cost us? We go from 55 to 70, to 75. Were does it end? 70 is fine. Where do we need to get to an extra "4 minutes" earlier? I thought we were in a recession, shouldn't we be "saving gas mileage", saving tax payer dollars....Keep it at 70. Those that want to drive 75, drive in the fast lane, and the cops should give them a "free pass".....why go through all the expense!

  • In the first place, "most people" do not drive above the speed limit. "Some" do, but not "most".
No matter what the speed limit it, those "some" will drive 5 to 10 miles faster anyway.
It makes no sense when we are supposed to be lessening our dependence on oil, to increase the speed limit so we start using more. It will be these same people that are crying the loudest about the high gas prices. Go figure!

  • "I'll be getting places 5 mph faster, and I'll enjoy that," O'Connor said.

May be O'Connor needs a Math class, going from 70 mph - 75 mph means saving 4 minutes after driving 70 miles. For the obese lifestyle that characterizes this landscape, such efficiency is contradictory.

O'Connor also needs a class in Logic. Even in Democracy, what "most" people practice does not automatically become "right."

  • If the roads are designed to be driven at 80 mph then why not drive 80 mph on them? Who cares if you burn more high dollar gas as long as you get there 10 min. early. I think 80 is a nice round number to set the speed limit at. There will always be those that speed and those that will do 50mph in an 80 mph zone. Just bust those that are speeding and those that are going too slow.

  • Seriously, if the speed limit is 75, they will drive 80. There are always going to be people who want to drive faster. I do not get it. I put cruise on the speed limit and go. I do not understand the need to speed.
