BATTLE OF THE BANKS Wells Fargo lost to First Victoria in its bid to become Victoria County's bank.

Sean Kennedy, county treasurer, said that while Wells Fargo offered lower fees, First Victoria offered a higher interest rate that will more than offset those fees. The commissioners court approved the contract on Monday that will run for four years. All monies deposited to the county - including those that go toward the Citizens Medical Center and the Navigation District - will be deposited with First Victoria.

COUNTY DECLARES 'POLICE OFFICERS' WEEK'The commissioners court declared May 15-21 as Police Officers' Week. It also declared May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day.

The county and city will hold a May 17 ceremony honoring peace officers at municipal court.

According to the county resolution, 158 law enforcement officers were killed nationwide last year in the line of duty - 17 of those were from Texas. Six officers in the state have already died this year.

Victoria County has put most of the land at 622 Schroeder Road up for sale.

The Victoria Commissioners Court approved the measure on Monday. The county wants to sell 1.2 acres of the property's 1.98 acres.

Gary Burns, commissioner of Precinct 3, said he wanted to hold onto part of the land to maintain access to a future subdivision and a person's house.

The future subdivision lies toward the back of the property and is only accessible via a county right-of-way road on the property. The subdivision already has houses built on it with people living there.

An inlet to a person's house next to the property is also only accessible via that road.

The state abandoned the land and gave it to the county about a year ago. Burns has called the land trashy and said he hoped for the county to gain some tax revenue after selling it.

The court hired Coldwell Banker as the county's realtor. The county's attorney had suggested that it hire a realtor, such as Coldwell Banker, which has dealt with county property.

Kevin Janak, Precinct 2 commissioner, said during the commissioners court meeting that a few people have inquired about purchasing the property.
