While the UH System search committee for a new University of Houston-Victoria president mulls over the pros and cons of the three candidates for the position, we have hopes for certain characteristics in a future president.
To recap, William Fannin, Philip Castille and Earl Yarbrough have interviewed for the position. UHV President Tim Hudson vacated the position when he was reassigned last summer.
Fannin is currently provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Castille is the special assistant to the chancellor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Yarbrough is currently president of Savannah State University.
Two other candidates for the UHV presidency dropped out for personal reasons.
While these gentlemen have admirable traits and credentials, we hope they have additional characteristics, too.
We would want a president who would be deeply involved with the community, who has a vision for growth, who has business sense and who has the charisma to lead.
We would want a president who could navigate the system for UHV progress - continued progress in realizing the goal of being a destination university. In other words, we want a university that students all over the state would seek out for their higher education.
We've said it before, but it bears repeating here again: UHV had a president with all of these characteristics in Tim Hudson. Although it's impossible to undo what's been done, we hope the next president has the will and the ability to move UHV forward.
We urge the 12-member search committee chaired by William A. Staples, president of UH-Clear Lake, to consider the aforementioned characteristics when making a recommendation to UH System Chancellor Renu Khator this month. We also urge the chancellor to truly consider the possibilities in Victoria.
