Victoria County Courthouse has bat problem

That's not the sweet smell justice you're breathing in at the Victoria County Courthouse - it's just bats.

"It's kind of like having a skunk under your porch," said Tim Hanks, owner of Commercial Bat Control.

On the second-floor of the courthouse, visitors can smell an ammonia scent. Dale Lesikar, courthouse maintenance supervisor, said that bats get into the courthouse from a crack near the top part of the building.

About a year ago, workers caught about 25 bats as they flew down to the first floor and into County Judge Don Pozzi's office. Maintenance workers have used fishing nets and trash cans to catch the Mexican free-tailed bats that can squeeze through a hole no bigger than a pencil.

The county is set to hire Commercial Bat Control to catch the critters, plug the hole and get rid of the smell.

The company will come to the courthouse on Sunday and the Victoria County Commissioners Court will discus the measure on Monday.
