The University of Houston-Victoria will host three summer camps intended to provide kids hands-on learning activities in the fields of DNA and plant biotechnology.

The one camp stationed in Victoria - plant biotechnolgoy camp - will give kids ages 12 to 19 the opportunity to participate in action-filled activities while exploring and solving problems using plant genome and DNA technology.

Those activities include: detection of microbes on surface, in air and in water; sterilization of plant materials and plant genome; plant tissue and culture cloning; isolation and characterization of plant DNA; and identification of genetically modified plants.

The UHV-Sugar Land campus is hosting the plant biotechnology camp, as well.

The Sugar Land camps will also host a DNA, genetics and forensics camp for students interested in becoming doctors, forensic scientists, biologists or pursuing another science-based career.

An application and a medical release are required to attend the camps. They can be found at www.uhvconnect.org.

The deadline to register to enroll in the Victoria class is July 7.

The deadline to register for the Sugar Land plant biotechnology camp is June 23, and June 9 for the DNA camp.
