Victoria College is set to honor three retired or retiring professors at spring commencement.

This will be the inaugural year for VC's professor emeritus program - a recognition to VC professors who have made significant contribution to the college's educational mission and goals.

Charles Spurlin, a retired history professor, and Marty Domke Horecka, a retired nursing instructor, will be honored, along with business management professor Mark Henry, who will retire at the end of 2011.

Those who qualify for the professor emeritus program have served as a full-time faculty member at VC for a minimum of 15 years and are retired, or will be retiring, by the end of the fiscal year.

"This is a great way to honor retired or retiring faculty who have not only given years of service, but have continually demonstrated dedication to Victoria College," said VC Vice President of Instruction Patricia Vandervoort.

In addition to being recognized at the spring 2011 commencement, professor emeriti will enjoy a number of college privileges that include access to college facilities and resources along with an open and on-going invitation to participate in commencement ceremonies and any other college special events. Additionally, professor emeriti will have the option to teach courses part-time at the college as adjunct instructors.

Retired or retiring professors must be nominated to or apply for the professor emeritus program. The nomination or application then passes through several reviews including the appropriate division dean, the vice president of instruction and human resources, until finally the nomination or application is approved by the president.

Spurlin taught history at VC starting in 1961. He retired in 1997, but is still active at the college and the Museum of the Coastal Bend with alumni events and other regional history projects. Spurlin was nominated by history professor Michael Hummel.

Horecka began at VC in 1996 and retired in January. She was nominated by fellow nursing instructor Stacy Barth.

Henry, who applied for the program, began teaching at VC in 1989 and is planning to retire at the end of this year.
