Yoakum city manager announces retirement

Some changes are afoot at Yoakum City Hall.
City manager Calvin Cook has announced his retirement effective July 31.
Cook, who has worked for the city for more than 40 years, said it was simply time to step down.
"I discussed our future with my wife and we felt it was time to retire so that we could do and enjoy things we have not been able to do during my career," Cook said.
Cook began his career with the city of Yoakum in 1968 on the Water Department crew. In 1973, he was promoted to water/wastewater superintendent and, in 1985, he was named the director of Public Works. He became city manager in 2002.
The Yoakum city council will be seeking Cook's replacement.
"The council is discussing its options for the process and will make its decision within the next week or so," Cook said.
A change in the Yoakum Fire Department has also taken place.
Fire Chief/Emergency Medical Services Director Phillip Baker has retired.
Baker served two stints as Yoakum's fire chief, from March 1983 to June 1987, then again from June 2002 until his retirement on April 29.
Mark Herchek, who has served as both the chief and an assistant chief with the volunteer fire department for more than 30 years, is the interim fire chief, said Cook.
"We have received a few applications for the position," said the city manager. "During the next few weeks, we will evaluate the applications and schedule interviews."
