Truck driver in bus crash owns clean record

BUS DRIVER'S RECORDSA separate search of the Valley Transit driver's driving record shows that while Guadalupe Ruiz, a 57-year-old Edinburgh man, was involved in four bus crashes since 2004, he was never deemed at-fault, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The man thought to be at-fault for last week's deadly Victoria bus crash maintains a relatively clean driving record.

Larry Marceaux, 30, of Vinton, La., received three speeding tickets in his home state since 2008, according to records provided Wednesday by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Louisiana authorities ticketed Marceaux twice in 2008 and once in early 2010, records show. Marceaux has no other poor marks on his driving record.

One woman died and more than a dozen other passengers were injured last week after a Valley Transit passenger bus driver swerved to avoid Marceaux's pickup. The high-speed maneuver forced the bus onto the U.S. Highway 77 South median near Fleming Prairie Road, and then into a utility pole.

The Texas Department of Public Safety originally reported it cited Marceaux for failing to yield the right-of-way. Marceaux pulled prematurely into oncoming traffic because a tractor-trailer, turning off the highway, blocked his view of oncoming traffic, officials said.

Since then, law enforcement corrected its original statement to note Marceaux has yet to be ticketed - pending the results of an ongoing investigation.

Because the investigation will continue until at least next week, it is unknown now whether authorities will file charges against Marceaux or ticket him, Trooper Gerald Bryant said.
