Well, it's May, and we at the Victoria Art League are in the final month of the year.

As you may have read in the Art Corner column each month, we have been busy with classes, workshops and various activities from our very fun Boots for Bucks contest to the Holiday Market day in December to our Spring Art Show we just finished last month.

In April we participated in the Earth Day at the community center and showed a bunch of elementary students how to recycle stuff by creating art with found objects and things you would throw away. All through the year, our members have shown artwork in various places in town, including Wells Fargo, the Library, First Victoria, Citizens Hospital, Victoria Airport and the Welder Center, where we hope you got to see the last viewing of our spring show.

We had youth painting murals for the zoo, weddings, receptions, birthdays and other celebrations take place in our facilities helping make this an eventful and successful year. We have also improved our building by replacing part of our roof and windows and restoring them to their original beauty.

In June we start our new year and would like to invite people interested in any phase of art or just those who want to support the visual arts to join us at the Victoria Art League. Memberships are only $30 per individual or $50 for a family membership for the year.

Our last meeting of the year was May 15. New officers for 2011-2012 were installed and those in attendance partook of a covered dish dinner.

There will be children's classes offered in the summer with Michele Evans as the instructor. Classes will include various activities such as mosaics, paper mache', pastels, sculpture and more: First and second grades are June 6-9 or July 11-14; third and fourth grades are June 13-16 or July 18-21, and fifth grade and up are June 20-23 or July 25-28. Cost is $64 per four day session plus a $12 supply fee and an $8 building use fee. Send your deposit of $20 to Michele Evans, 407 Monterrey Drive, Victoria 77904.

All classes are limited to 10 students and will be at the Victoria Art League, 905 S. Bridge. A new beginning photography class with Jim Feig began May 3, painting with Sonny Timme is still continuing and a possible Pottery Wheel Throwing class is to be offered. Please call the Art League at 361-572-0825 for information or come by to see us. It might not have been April Showers in Victoria, but things definitely will be blooming in May at your Community Art League.
