Jimmy Mauric, left, Spoetzl Brewery brewmaster and Dennis Vargo, auction chairman of the Shiner Catholic Church picnic, show off some of the auction items for the 25th annual event on Sunday. The items include a "There's never a drought in Shiner" poster autographed by Matthew McConaughey.

The 25th version of the Shiner Catholic Church picnic, voted the best picnic by the readers of the "Catholic Lighthouse," the newspaper of the Victoria Diocese, will feature more music than ever at Legion Park, 102 S. Ave. G.

Texas band Honeybrowne is one new addition. They will join the Emotions inside the dining hall Sunday for a dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

"We wanted to expand our music and bring another exciting band in the evening," said Philip Pilat, event co-chairman. "We wanted to bring in a variety of music that hasn't been here before and boost attendance for the evening dance."

Honeybrowne, featuring Victoria native Fred Andrews, made its recording debut in 2001 and is a regular on the South Texas music circuit.

Admission to the dance is $10. Pre-sale tickets are available at the Shiner Restaurant and Bar, Sweet Home Kitchen, Harley's Liquor in Yoakum, Bare Knuckle Screen Printing and Design in Hallettsville, Radicke Resale in Gonzales and High-Brehm Hats and Western Wear in Victoria.

The music begins on Saturday with Los Kolaches from 6 to 10 p.m.

Sunday's free musical lineup includes local accordion players from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Shiner Hobo Band from 2 to 4 p.m., and a battle dance inside the dining hall from 4 to 8 p.m, featuring the Texas Legacy Czech Band and Alpenfest, a German music band making its Shiner picnic debut.

Outside the dining hall, music will rock the historic beer stand and the pavilion with All-star Entertainment from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and Chris Rybak from 7:30 to 11 p.m.

Throw in the three-meat dinner, the live auction, children's activities, arts and crafts, bingo and concessions, and the picnic offers something for everyone.

Plates to go will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Shiner Knights of Columbus Hall at 1972 alternate U.S. Highway 90 East. Dine in at the Legion Hall will be from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinners are $8 each.

Four Masses will also be celebrated at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.

A polka Mass will be at 5 p.m. Saturday. In addition masses will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Finally, a traditional Latin Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Sunday.
