Calhoun County is ready for hurricane season, which starts June 1.

Forecasters are predicting this year's season to be rough, but Calhoun County is prepared, its Emergency Management Coordinator, LaDonna Thigpen, said.

Thigpen and her staff prepare for hurricane season the same way every year, no matter what is predicted, she said.

To make sure the city is prepared, Thigpen said, officials go over the routes that will be used in the event of an evacuation, checking with coordinators in surrounding cities to make sure the routes haven't changed.

They also ask residents to register directly with the Emergency Management Coordinator's office, noting any special needs, Thigpen said.

"We need them to register with us so that we're very familiar with their information and needs in the event of an evacuation," she said.

People can register at the EMC office, 211 S. Ann St. in Port Lavaca. Those who wish to register may also request a form mailed to them or pick up a form at various locations, including the hospital, the senior citizens center, the clinic and various doctors offices.

"The main thing we do is update personnel and make sure everyone will know what's going on if there's a hurricane," Thigpen said.
