East, West prepare for rivalry game Friday

Cheyenne Nalls, 15, photo editor of The Warrior News, gets costumed students to pose for her story about spirit week at Victoria West High School. The theme of Thursday, Nov. 3, was titled "Can't stop the super warriors."

Wearing a pink Super Girl T-shirt, Jasmin Olivares united with classmates wearing super hero bling to school for spirit week on Thursday.

Each day this week, the students have participated in spirit week themes ranging from Halloween shirts on Monday, rock star hats and sunglasses on Tuesday to neon colors on Wednesday.

"My favorite would have to be super hero day, which is today," Jasmin said. "I'm wearing a shirt with the Superman emblem, but it's pink and decorated and stuff."

Spirit week will culminate with the second annual football game between Victoria East and Victoria West high schools Friday night.

The 16-year-old from Victoria West said last year the annual East vs. West football game seemed more competitive than this year.

"This year is more calm," Jasmin said. "But a lot of people are still into the rivalry."

Jasmin said she is excited to perform with the drill team for the first time this year.

"I get to face home-side, it will be fun supporting and representing the school," Jasmin said.

Cheer Coach Phallon Crawford said she thinks everyone is getting more excited as game day draws near.

"I think last year being the first year was our biggest year," Crawford said. "But with the girls' volleyball team making their playoff run on Tuesday, we had a spirit festival to support them."

The drill team and the cheerleaders will present a joint performance at the pep rally on Friday, Crawford said.

Victoria West Principal Debbie Crick said this year is just as exciting as last year.

"We have had events and preparations throughout this week to build up for the game," Crick said. "We're really excited about Friday night."

In addition to the spirit activities, Crick said there will be a pep rally and tail gating on Friday.

Students will be decked out in camouflage for Friday's theme at Victoria West. Meanwhile, Victoria East is planning a "Red Out."

"We encourage students to 'wear their battle red,' as we fight the battle of the boot and the battle of the sword," said Victoria East Principal Greg Crockett. "The students know what it's all about."

The winner of the rivalry game will be presented the boot trophy by the Chamber of Commerce. A real sword from the Football Booster Club will also be presented to the winner to be stored in their trophy case until the following year.

East held both trophies after winning the original rivalry game, but the boot was returned to the Chamber of Commerce Monday in preparation for this week's game.

"We're hoping it comes back home to East again this year," Crockett said.

Announcements over the intercoms keep students informed about spirit day activities.

"We are definitely anticipating some big excitement on the campus here tomorrow," Crockett said. "Trying to get the student body ready to be loud in the stands for our boys."

Danielle Smith, 17, the mascot at Victoria East, said she is looking forward to getting dressed up as Miss Titan and participating in the red-out during school hours, but one of her favorite activities is the chant competitions between the freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

"It's kind of a 'we got spirit' thing," Danielle said. "The seniors always win."

Danielle said she enjoys seeing everybody unite across the school.

"It's about our pride. If we beat West - I don't know how to say it any other way," Danielle said. "We're gonna win anyway, so it doesn't really matter."

At the end of the day, the good-natured rivalry between the high schools is just fun and games.

"It's a wonderful rivalry," Crockett said. "We have friends on the other side, and when it's all said and done, we're still friends."

  • The band and drill team were told by the principal to face the other side. Think what you want, I guess, but they were doing what they were told. I'm sorry you feel the way you do, but I won't stand back and say nothing when you are calling the kids and their directors classless and childish. You don't know the whole story, so you should refrain from the name calling.

  • nope. have to call BS on flam this time. Although I have no definitive proof (no one does that we can find), we were in the stands that night - and the band sponsors, LOTS of parents, and an assistant principal were all taken by surprise when the band played facing the wrong direction. HS Bands play to the HOME side. We suspect that the 'we planned it that way' story was a poor attempt to avoid embarassment. rude and classless.

  • Try not to PANIC over something that just doesn't matter labahia.

  • I guess we'll see tonight, I sure hope you're not right.

  • I really don't care what side they perform for....I just want to wish both teams good luck tonight!!

  • I think that East should perform for the East Side and West should perform for the West Side. I think that since the game is in Victoria...it is like a home game for each of them, right?!? What is this Victorian not understanding here?!

  • The decision for the bands and dance teams to perform (PERform, not PREform) to their own sides was mutually agreed upon by the two high school principals. The decision was made so that fans in the away stands would not have to crowd into the home stands to see their students perform.

Know the facts before you throw out accusations.

  • Well, then you aren't alone and you will have plenty of childish friends that enjoy nothing more than making up something to whine about.

Have a great time with that approach to things.

  • So they got together and decided to make West look completely classless, and West agreed? We'll see what East does tonight to see if your right. Somehow I doubt it. And no, I'm not being childish. I've never seen a visiting team preform their halftime show to to visitor side. The stands were full of comments and none of them were good. Even heard from West parents later who said they were embarrassed by it.

  • labahia,
Did you think even for a second that maybe they both "planned" to play the way they did.

Even better, they probably thought to themselves what would make someone like "labahia" make some kind of outrageous statement next year? Hmmm, maybe if we secretly play to our own home fans, that will get some idiot excited and make them post something silly online.

What do you think? I think we could have a long conversation on childish behavior. Namely yours!

  • At halftime, I hope East shows it has class and preforms to the home side, unlike West's childish behavior last year.
