UHV announces new finalist for provost

William Phillips, dean of the College of Education at Eastern Kentucky University, was named on Friday as another finalist for the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Houston-Victoria.
"Dr. Phillips is a strong finalist for our pool, and I look forward to all of the finalists coming to the UHV campus for interviews," said Jane Devick-Fry, chairwoman of the UHV Provost Search Committee and an associate professor in the School of Education & Human Development.
Phillips also is a professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. He earned his bachelor's and doctoral degrees in special education from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and his master's in special education from the University of Mississippi in University.
Prior to going to Eastern Kentucky University in 2006, Phillips was dean of the College of Education at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania and chair of Special Education at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. He also taught at Eastern Illinois University and was an elementary school special education teacher.
The two other finalists announced earlier this week are Jeffrey Cass, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and an English professor at the University of Louisiana in Monroe, and James McDonald, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and an anthropology professor at Southern Utah University in Cedar City.
Another finalist, Lisa Abney, provost and vice president of academic and student affairs, and an English professor at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., dropped out of the UHV search process on Thursday.
The finalists will soon come to UHV for interviews and meetings with the campus community.
