Veterans Day programs to honor veterans: Schedule of events
The Victoria County Veterans Council will host Veterans Day activities Friday.
At 7:30 a.m., a flag ceremony will take place on the Victoria County Courthouse steps. Members will then take flags to area cemeteries, to place on veterans' graves.
The Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Main Street at Goodwin Avenue, proceed to Church Street and end on Bridge Street at the courthouse.
The Veterans Day ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will include the laying of memorial wreaths by patriotic groups, patriotic band music and songs.
Mayor Will Armstrong will be a special speaker.
The ceremony will conclude with firing squad volleys by Catholic War Veterans, St. John's Post No. 1269 and taps played by Charles Hauboldt.

The Victoria College Student Veteran Association will host a free screenings of "Blackhawk Down" beginning at 11 a.m. at VC Student Center, 2200 E. Red River St., with screenings throughout the afternoon.
Veterans' Appreciation Luncheon at VFW Hall, 2001 Lova Drive, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, serving barbecue brisket with all the trimmings. The meal is sponsored by Warrior's Weekend. Contact Ron Kocian, 361-572-0001 or 361-550-0187.
Walmart Super Center will provide lunch and supper to veterans from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. Veterans will eat free, family members and guests will pay $5 each. Meal includes hot dog, hamburger, chips and a drink. Veterans also are asked to bring military photos of them to be framed and returned to veteran.
Port Lavaca - The American Legion, VFW and American G.I. Forum will be host to the annual Veterans Day Parade, at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sandcrab Stadium.
Calhoun High School students will hold a Veterans Day program to honor veterans from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Calhoun High School Auditorium in Port Lavaca.
Yorktown - DeWitt County Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1029, will host services at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial, state Highway 72 East. Guest speaker will be U.S. Army Warrant Officer Larry Castagneto, the last full-time Vietnam era aviator on active duty with more than 42 years of active and reserve duty. Seating is limited. Bring lawn chairs.
Cuero - 9:30 a.m., Cuero High School, Gobbler Stadium, student-led program, flag raising, reading of "In Flanders Field," the meaning of Veterans Day, music and taps. A reception will follow in the CHS library.
Westhoff School, 244 Lynch St., will honor veterans with a program and lunch, 11 a.m. Friday. Students will pay tribute to all veterans through song, power point presentation and essays. All veterans will be recognized. Reservations have ended.
Goliad - The American Legion will host services at 10 a.m. Friday at the North Courthouse Square. Margaret Myers, a retired Air Force registered nurse, will be the guest speaker. Varon Houck, a 100-year-old Navy veteran, who lives at La Bahia Nursing and Rehabilitation home, will be a special guest. The Goliad High School band will play, and the school's training cadets will post colors. The Girl Scouts and the Cub Scouts will recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The Goliad Intermediate School campus will host services at 8:30 a.m. around the flag pole. Veteran Steve Kennedy, of Goliad, will speak. First through third-place winners in the school's essay contest will be recognized. Winners will read their essays. The sixth-grade beginners band will perform. Moulton - 10 a.m., Moulton High School Student Council will be host of a program at the high school gymnasium.
Hallettsville - 9 a.m., Hallettsville High School gymnasium; 10:15 a.m., Sacred Heart School, flag raising ceremony, all veterans and auxiliary members invited.
Ezzell - 1 p.m. at the school, music, reading of student essays, "Wall of Stars" presentation, reception for veterans.
Refugio - VFW Post 6290 will present colors and a roll call of county veterans, at 4:50 p.m. Friday, at the Austwell Community Center. Afterward, the community will celebrate its centennial with a small celebration. For more information, call 361-526-6034.
