Warnell is a former English and reading teacher, instructing mostly high school students.

She worked in Houston and Cape Girardeau, Mo., before taking some time off to raise her family.

She then worked in Edna and Region III Education Service Center before moving to Bloomington, where she worked as principal and special programs director.

The Bloomington school board has named Delores Warnell its lone finalist for superintendent.

The action came during the board's meeting on Monday.

Warnell, 48, has served as Bloomington's interim superintendent for more than a year.

"I'm looking forward to great things happening in the district," she said. "We've been doing a lot of good things in Bloomington anyway, and we want to continue getting the community involved."

Warnell said she will continue to gear the district toward making students successful in academics, but she also wants to make the school the hub of the community.

"We're trying to get the parents to know the school's a safe place for their kids and for them," she said.

Warnell said she was anticipating the nomination after the board asked her to get her superintendent certification.

So she ventured back to school, taking 19 hours of classes, completing an internship and passing the certification test in October.

The board approved her nomination unanimously.

According to law, after 21 days, the board will officially offer her the job.
