A new apartment complex will soon offer Victoria residents one more potential place to call home.
AHC Construction breaks ground on the 244-unit apartment complex Friday.
The yet-to-be-named community, at the corner of Ben Wilson Street and Houston Highway, will contain one- and two-bedroom apartments that average about 900 square feet, said Will Harper, a principal with Allen Harrison Co., the developer and general contractor for the project.
AHC Construction is a subsidiary of Allen Harrison.
The upscale community will include a resort-style pool, fitness and business centers and a clubhouse, Harper said. For an added monthly fee, residents can purchase on-site parking garage space.
Individual apartments will include faux granite countertops and faux hardwood flooring, he said, as well as stainless steel appliances.
"It's really a nice product we think Victoria hasn't seen in some time now," Harper said.
Developers have not yet determined rental rates, he said, but they will be competitive with the city's nicer complexes.
Plans are to complete the first units around June.
Harper said the company selected its location because of its proximity to H-E-B, Citizens Medical Center, Victoria College and the University of Houston-Victoria. Downtown Victoria and the incoming Caterpillar plant are also nearby.
Victoria was attractive because of ongoing Eagle Ford Shale activity, which could potentially affect the area for decades to come, he said. Caterpillar also means not only new company employees, but also potential suppliers and other manufacturing companies that could make their way to town.
"We foresee the housing shortage continuing to grow," he said. "We're excited about the development. We think it will be a good project for everyone involved."

i'm sure the builders know full well the criminal element in the area. regardless, those apartments will be booked up as soon as they're built. and heck, maybe having more people there will attract other businesses to the area, too.
November 18, 2011 at 10:07 p.m.Let's see, an apartment a few feet from a busy train track, two or three blocks from the neighborhood with the most 911 calls and behind a Wendy's or the new gated complex off 463?
Mmmm....let's see....competetive rates....complete with faux granite and wood.
Do they really say these things with a serious face?
November 18, 2011 at 9:49 p.m.need a garage if you don't want your car jacked.
November 18, 2011 at 2:48 p.m.Is there a section 8 component to this project?
November 18, 2011 at 11:21 a.m.Pay for parking? Faux this and faux that, but it is upscale? WHY for God's sake would you put anything "upscale" on that side of the city? Welcome crime right in.......
November 18, 2011 at 8:18 a.m.What is going to happen when all the drilling stops and the oil boom comes to a hault? There will be a lot of nice, cheap apartments in the victoria area.
November 18, 2011 at 6:01 a.m.Sounds like a very nice improvement for Victoria. The location is on the southeast side of Victoria and should help to improve the area business. If they keep it as niice looking as the Section 8 apartments on Salem road, that would be great.
November 17, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.Houston Hwy and Ben Wilson? hmm
