Life at its best: A trusted guide
By Jim Graff
I have a good friend who's an expert fisherman. I enjoy fishing with him because he knows the very best time and place to catch fish. He also knows the best bait to use for the fish we're trying to catch. No matter what, when I'm with this guy, we come home with a good haul of fish.
Now, if I were fishing on my own, I wouldn't have the same results. The reason I have success is pretty clear - I have a really good guide, and I listen to him.
Jesus tells us that we also have a guide in life called the Holy Spirit. His job is to lead us into the blessed life God has for us. Our job is simply to follow his leading.
Now, I'm not implying that this is always easy to do. We can see that from the life of Abraham, the Father of our faith.
Hebrews 11:8 says, "By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."
You see, God had big plans for Abraham. They were bigger than Abraham could have ever imagined. God wanted to take Abraham from where he was and make a great nation out of him. He wanted to bless his family and give them a lasting inheritance.
But Abraham had to follow God to this new place. Obeying meant leaving his family, his country and heading toward the unknown.
Have you ever been there? You can see what God wants to do but are not sure how to get there or the way just looks too hard.
Maybe you have hopes in your heart about relationships that need to be mended or a career that needs developed; or maybe you have hopes about your children living in the wisdom and protection of God.
Let me encourage it's not so much a question of what, but of who - who are we following? God wants to lead us daily so that these hopes become a reality in our life
2 Peter 1:3 reminds us that, "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." It's in his power that we find our empowered and prosperous life.
This, by the way, is the reason for the local church. It's the place designed to help us grow in our understanding of God and his purposes for us. It's also where we find examples and mentors in the faith who encourage and keep us accountable.
God wants to fulfill his promises in your life, just like he did for Abraham. He wants to bring about more blessing than you could imagine. Don't allow what's unknown to keep you moving ahead on God's path. Trust the guide inside, and you'll be amazed at where God takes you.
