Metting family hosts reunion

Gottfried Metting Sr. and his wife, Friedricka Steindorff, along with their four sons, Gottfried Jr., Herman, Albert and Frederick, came to the United States on Nov. 28, 1859. from Prussia, Germany. After seven days of crude transportation, they arrived and settled in Yorktown. Gottfried Metting I was born in Garmelin-Anhalt-Prussia-Germany in 1816.

On Oct. 22, the annual Metting reunion was held at the Yorktown Fire Station. Fifty-six descendants of the late Gottfried Metting, Albert Metting, Herman Otto Metting, Frederick Metting and Christoph Metting attended.

Roland and Mary Metting were the longest married couple in attendance with 66 years. The oldest man in attendance was Roland Metting and Alfreda John was the oldest woman. The youngest child was Helen Hartman. The most recently married couple was Danny and Dianna Metting. Ann Johnson and Ron Metting traveled the farthest. Everyone was reminded to send or bring in recipes for the future Metting family cookbook. Recipes can be sent to mettingfamilyreunion@hotmail.com.

Genealogists Patricia Williams and Kenneth Foerster are currently updating the Metting family history and are asking family members to contact them at 361-572-9640 or 361-894-8042 with any update information. They are also compiling CD's of the entire Metting family which will be available for sale at next year's reunion.

All descendants of the Metting family are invited to attend next year's reunion at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorktown on March 10 at 10 a.m.
