Editor, the Advocate:

Let me preface the following statement by an explanation of my viewpoint. I was in high school and college in the late '50s and early '60s. Many Saturday afternoons were spent listening to Kern Tips broadcast SWC football games. When the SWC broke up, part of me died.

Another part of me is hurting now with the fragmenting of the Big 12.

For many years, my favorite two teams were the University of Texas and whoever was playing Texas A&M. That all changed in 1999 with the bonfire collapse. I knew students who were injured, and I realized how much UT and A&M really had in common as fellow Texans. This feeling was reinforced when I moved to Oregon. I never warmed up to Ducks and Beavers. I'll miss watching UT play A&M after this year. It seems like the Aggies are trying to get out of a shadow that no longer exists. I'll miss them.
