A Waco man died Wednesday afternoon in a San Antonio hospital after being burned in a wreck on Farm-to-Market Road 3131 in Jackson County the day before.
An Edna woman was also injured.
James Berry, 70, of Waco, was driving a tractor-trailer rig for the Army/Air Force Exchange Distribution Center east on the farm road toward Lolita when he lost control of the rig and hit a guard rail just east of the Palmetto Dam bridge at 7:48 a.m., said Department of Public Safety Trooper Tim Nielsen.
The trailer began to jackknife then swung into the west bound lane, striking a car driven by Melody Craig, 51, of Edna, Nielsen said.
The guard rails on either side of the road left nowhere for Craig to go when the trailer swerved in front of her Dodge Avenger, Nielsen said.
After the collision, the fuel tank of the tractor-trailer caught on fire, completely destroying the trailer. Berry escaped with several second- and third-degree burns, Nielsen said.
Craig was transported to Jackson County Hospital in Edna, and Berry was transported to Citizens Medical Center, then flown to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
Nielsen said Berry's wife called Wednesday afternoon to say that he had died.
A Jackson County Hospital spokesperson said no one was available who could release Craig's condition.
