Citizens Medical Center is stepping up hope for breast cancer awareness with its first ever 5K competitive run.
The Steps for Hope run begins Oct. 15 at Citizens HealthPlex and winds through Woodway Subdivision and eventually ends back at the HealthPlex.
In addition to the competitive run, victory laps in lengths of 1, 2 or 3 miles will be available for breast cancer survivors.
The funds raised from the event go toward free mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women in the area.
Last year, Citizens' October breast cancer events in total raised enough money to fund 86 mammograms.
In the past 10 years, Citizens has been able to provide at least 400 mammograms, said Susan Morrison, continuing education coordinator at the hospital
"It's a wonderful thing," Morrison said. "It's all about celebrating these survivors and coming together to help other women become survivors."
Morrison is adamant that mammograms and preventive education is the key to saving women's lives.
"There are very few people who aren't affected in some way (by breast cancer)," Morrison said. "I still get misty. It's so moving."
