A pair of Victoria city champions are taking on tougher competition.

Claude Bridges and Mark Spivey teed it up alongside some big names at the PGA Southern Texas Section's Texas Senior Open at Victoria Country Club.

"They're serious," Bridges said. "They're not out here just having a fun day of golf like we normally have. Most of them are retired, but some of them are trying to make a living. It's different."

Bridges won the most recent city championship and Spivey, a local dentist, won consecutive city titles in 1992 and 1993.

Spivey is in 26th place with a 5-over score of 148. Bridges is tied at 48th with a 12-over 156.

Bridges' score was right at the projected cut.

Both local golfers competed in the same field as David Lundstrom and David Ogrin, who's PGA and Champions Tour earnings are in the millions, and five-time PGA Tour winner Danny Edwards.

Spivey enjoys playing the tournament on a course he's familiar with.

"It's an advantage for me," Spivey said. "It's just kind of tough when you're playing with a lot of guys who've been on the PGA Tour and who you've seen on TV before. It's kind of nerve-wracking."

The Victoria City Championships are played during the oppressively hot and humid month of July, but the weather still caused problems for the golfers even without the heat.

Golfers had to deal with a double-digit wind gust coming out of the north, which made the course play longer.

"It's (the course) set up for a South wind and it blew out of the North, and it really was tough for everybody," Spivey said.

Bridges acknowledged the wind was challenge, but it was his short game that cost him some strokes in the second roundy.

Bridges said he drove the ball well, but had issues putting. Bridges had four bogies.

"I hit the ball off the tee pretty good, but it doesn't matter if you don't putt," Bridges said.

Bridges shot identical scores of 78 the first two days of the tournament.

Spivey had his own issues on the greens, bogeying three times.

"I drove it really well today, I've just been struggling with the putting and I can't figure out why," Spivey said.

After shooting an opening round of 72, he added four more strokes to that score on Thursday.

Although he's 20 strokes off the lead after two days, the tournament is helping Bridges prepare for the VCC Club Championship, which is scheduled for Oct. 22-23.

"It helps get your mind set for the tournament," Bridges said. "It's different than coming here with your buddies and playing a friendly round of golf."

Rummells in the lead

After two days of the Texas Senior Open, David Rummells is in the lead with an 8-under 136.

Rummells doesn't have too much room for error because Mitch Adcock is only one stroke behind.

Ron Schroeder, Terry Snograss and Bob Niger are in a third place tie after shooting 4-under.

And then there were two

After the first couple of days of the Texas Senior Open, Bridges and Spivey are the only remaning local golfers in the tournament.

Greg Hughes was the only other local golfer playing on Thursday.

He was nine strokes from making the cut after shooting 21-over.
