You're right, I can't blame someone who would rather pay $125 to have them transported by ambulance to another hospital over 100 miles away, rather than treat them and take the risk that they wouldn't be compensated or worse, get sued. I mean seriously, why should anyone expect a doctor, of all people, to help a sick person if they're not going to get paid? The fact that the patient you mentioned was undocumented, well that just seals the deal. By God, no doctor should have to treat someone that is here illegally! When asking for the insurance card, they need to ask for documentation of citizenship.

Since Hospitals are reimbursed on a cost plus basis under Medicare part A, the govt picks up the tab for these patients. Basically the cost is shifted to the federal tax payers...oh my GOD

COBRA actually protects American workers that had insurance at their job, albeit it's actually a rip-off since most procedures covered by insurance are actually cheaper if you don't have insurance.
