Paige Weaver never really expected to be where she is now - the event chair of the Victoria County 2012 Relay for Life.
The 26-year-old Victoria woman's story with the Relay began when she first walked the Memorial High School track as a high school freshman.
She walked for one particular church family's daughter who was diagnosed with cancer. She later died.
"It hits close to home," Weaver said.
On Monday, Weaver and other Relay leaders will be at the Victoria College Student Center for its first fall kick-off. The kick-offs are held to get teams together for the Relay.
This is year 16 for the Relay, she said.
Spearheading the Relay is an exciting endeavor.
"I think it's all about growing and getting more involved," she said.
But the passion to fight for those who've experienced cancer does not stop with her.
Her husband is also a part of the Relay and helps keep her focused, she said.
"I'm really motivated," she said. "My husband and I have lost family and friends. We share that passion."
The Relay event in Victoria County has come a long way since Weaver first got involved more than 10 years ago.
Now, the Relay is held at Coleto Creek Park, a place Weaver feels is peaceful and perfect.
"It's definitely grown," she said. "I'm excited to be chair. It's about remembering what our focus is and why we are here."
