Women's Crisis Center

Owners and their pets are invited to take part in the Victory Yap and Celebration.

The event benefits the pet shelter at the new Women's Crisis Center from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 29 at Optimist Club Park.

The event is filled with contests, competitions and other activities for pets.

These include a pet parade, costume contest, talent contest and Halloweenie dog races. Awards will be given for the first three places in each event.

The "entry free" for each is one pet item of the participant's choice to help stock the pet shelter. These items could include pet food, treats, shampoo and more.

Free hot dogs and drinks and entertainment will be provided. Optimist Club Park is in Riverside Park at 332 McCright Drive.

Ground was broken for the women's shelter, a project of Mid-Coast Family Services, in November 2010 and is on schedule to be completed in December.

Some of the start-up costs for the pet shelter were funded in part by a grant from the American Humane Association. The pet shelter will be one of only three in Texas at a women's shelter.

The crisis center construction is being funded, in part, by a community block grant from the city of Victoria.
