Editor, the Advocate:

Friday night (Oct. 14), I attended a high school football game in Floresville; the pregame ceremonies included a prayer by the Floresville student body president, The "Star Spangled Banner" and general announcements.

I noticed during the prayer that some people were talking and still seated. Then, during the "Star Spangled Banner," I noticed the same people, still seated, looking around, laughing and talking like nothing was going on. As a fellow American, I am ashamed of you for your total disrespect for other people and our national anthem.

As a veteran, your lack of respect is a slap in the face to all of us who have given you the freedom to be disrespectful. As a father, I dislike what you represent to my children.

Please do all of us a favor, if you can't stop talking, eating, or if you're too tired to stand and show respect for America, stay home or show up late, so that those of us who understand why we are able to be here at this football game don't have to witness such disgusting behavior.

Stand up, bow your head, close your mouth (unless you want to sing along), remove your hat, and place your right hand over your heart, just like we used to be taught in kindergarten.

Gary Fisher, Victoria

  • I must say that I'm surprised to see a veteran write a letter like this one. Politicians continue to shred the Constitution, but you're worried about a couple of clowns ignoring the national anthem at a high school football game? You need to sort out your priorities.

  • I'm starting to see this type of behavior more and more at football games, graduations, etc. Disgusting!
