Harrison Garrett, a senior at Victoria West High School, has been named a semifinalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Harrison is the son of Glen and Lannette Garrett, of Victoria.

National Merit Scholarship announced the names of 16,000 semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Harrison is involved in a number of school, church and community activities and has received numerous honors. He has been recognized as being one of the top 10 students in his class for the past three years; has been named to the All-Region band; has completed his Eagle Scout project, which entailed making improvements to the Athey Nature Trail at Riverside Park; and is giving back to his community through his church group by making improvements in housing projects, painting homes for the elderly and by serving as a peer counselor for the West Texas Camp Capers.

"Harrison Garrett is an extraordinary young man. In my many years of experience in working in public education, Harrison is one of those students who academically stands out, and you know immediately that you will see this young man advance to accomplish great things," said Sue Schmaltz, Harrison's counselor.

Harrison is currently applying to several universities where he hopes to realize his dream of becoming a mechanical engineer and will be able to continue his passion for playing music, playing his tuba in the marching band and, at some point, to play in a symphony orchestra."

Academically talented seniors have an opportunity to compete for scholarships worth more than $34 million. Students must complete several requirements in order to reach the finalist status, where an estimated 90 percent of semifinalists are predicted to reach finalist standing. About half of these students will have an opportunity to win a National Merit Scholarship and earn the coveted title of Merit Scholar.
