A Victoria man was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Judge Robert Cheshire sentenced Chad Wayne Barret, 39, after being presented a plea bargain agreement.
"The state was really concerned about the mental and emotionally well being of this child should she have to confront the defendant during trial; however, we were prepared to take this case forward should the defendant reject the state's offer," Victoria County Assistant District Attorney Elí E. Garza said in a news release.
On March 21, a counselor at a local elementary school was contacted by a child who told her the defendant had sexually abused her, according to the news release.
During the investigation by the Victoria County Sheriff's Office and Department Public Safety, Barret admitted to sexually assaulting the child, according to the news release.
