For a complete outdoorsman experience, the Brackenridge Recreation Complex in Edna is the place to go.

Owned and operated by the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority, the 460-acre park and event facility neighboring Lake Texana, has provided outdoor entertainment for people and families for about two decades. Brackenridge Park opened in March 1981, and three years ago in May 2009, the LNRA opened the 186-acre Brackenridge Main Event Center on the grounds.

"It was built to provide a facility for economic development and to bring people to the area," LNRA Recreation Manager Cammie Pearson said about the Main Event Center. "It's a private facility that was built from contributions from different organizations and individuals and grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife."

Since opening the Main Event Center to the public, Brackenridge has provided some of the most trafficked events, concerts, festivals and rodeos in the region, including the Jackson County Youth Faith, Outdoor Expo, Rezfest, Texana Chili Spill and Monster Trucks, among others.

One of the newest events to be featured at the park in January 2012 is Tough Mudder, an 11-mile endurance race that includes running, climbing and swimming through various obstacles, including walls, rocks, mud, fire, swinging ropes and giant hay bales.

Some of the outdoor park activities include a 13-mile equestrian trail around Lake Texana, paint ball, disc golf, soccer, volleyball, a 5-mile hike and bike trail, miniature golf, and playgrounds.

And for boaters, fishers, and Jet Ski enthusiasts, the park provides direct access to the lake. There's even a location on the lake for Jet Skiers to refuel.

For vacationers, Pearson said Brackenridge provides camping and RV sites in the park and near the Main Event Center for $20 to $25 per night. Partial RV hookups are available near the Main Event Center, and full and partial hookups are available inside the park.

Five, two-bedroom cabins ranging in price from $100 to $150 per night (depending on the season) can also be rented throughout the year, Pearson said.

And for private events, weddings, receptions, and family reunions, the park offers venues throughout the grounds that can be reserved for a fee.

"I use the park a couple times a year," Pearson said. "My kids have Jet Skied out here, and my whole family has used the park facilities. And now with the Main Event Center, they've really enjoyed all the festivities it offers."
