The South Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America has received a $150,000 contribution from the AEP Foundation in support of the Council's 2010-11 Capital Campaign.

The South Texas Council includes Victoria, Calhoun, Goliad, Jackson and Refugio counties.

The Council's campaign goal is $2.4 million and is dedicating the proceeds to fund a major facilities improvement plan for Camp Karankawa, according to a news release.

More than $1.6 million has been raised since the campaign began in early 2010.

"We're pleased the AEP Foundation supports organizations that are important to our employees, and those that improve the quality of life in the communities where we work, live and volunteer," said Wade Smith, president and chief operating officer, AEP Texas. "Many of our employees are volunteers and supporters of Scouting, and we are glad that this gift would help to improve the physical grounds of Camp Karankawa for generations to enjoy in the future."

With funds raised so far, parts of the camp's master improvement plan are already completed or started. Through a significant in-kind gift in 2010 from a Corpus Christi paving contractor, the camp has a new camp entry road and improvements to the existing roads. Additionally, two new regional toilet facilities have been completed, featuring sanitary toilet facilities, with hand washing stations and hot showers supported by modern wastewater treatment facilities. Plans are also being made to seek bids soon for the construction of a new visitor's center.

"We appreciate the support of the AEP Foundation and their generous gift to this year's Capital Campaign. The AEP Foundation and other organizations and individuals alike see the value of Scouting's positive impact on young people and communities. Camp Karankawa, through its 66 years has served as an extraordinary outdoor living classroom for thousands of scouts and their families. The AEP Foundation gift has provided another significant step towards the critical facility improvements under way at the Camp," said John Beauregard, Scout executive and CEO, South Texas Council.
